I'm very late with this post but it's been a busy couple of weeks. Last Chance Cafe is already in some bookshops, a couple of weeks early, and the reviews so far have been really good. I'm looking forward to setting out on the tour in April.
A couple of weeks ago I went to Bunbury in WA's south west, to celebrate International Women's Day with the women of the Zonta club there and to speak at their IWD Breakfast. I had a great time and met such a terrific group of women who made me very welcome. More than 300 women came to the breakfast all geared up to celebrate all those steps and strides and long jumps that have meant progress for women over the last 100 years, and to remember and celebrate the women who made it happen. here are some pictures from the breakfast.
With Zonta President Jo Wittorff
With former Zonta Bunbury President Nan Martella. The beautiful yellow rose was a surprise gift, it's now looking happy and healthy in my front garden.
The amazing Josephine Spaull, former ballerina, who danced with the Ballet Rambert and who has taught ballet throughout Australia for many decades.
Tyril Hougton, Penelope Northcott (who has just completed the Rottnest Swim solo) and Rosa Tognela
The Zonta Club of Bunbury does terrific work for women in developing countries and here at home. I was particularly moved by the work they do in co-operation with the Australian Birthing Kit Foundation.
http://www.birthingkitfoundation.org.au/ Do visit this site, have a look and watch the short video.
These simple birthing kits cost just $2 and contain a square of black plastic, three cords, two razor blades, some squares of gauze, rubber gloves and a small tablet of soap, and the wonderful thing is that they reduce the maternal and newboard death rate by 80% in countries including Ethiopia, Ghana, Vietnam and Afghanistan. The women in the Zonta Club of Bunbury have funded and assembled more than 9000 of these kits. What a great effort, in addition to all their other work, and what a wonderfully simple and powerful idea. If you want to know more, make a donation or help assemble the kits you can find out more from the Birthing Kit website or at http://bunburyzonta.mysouthwest.com.au.
Hope to see you on the tour, and you can always get the latest snippets off the facebook site.
Thanks for logging in.
